Construction and construction industry ● Prof. Dr.-Ing. E. h. Manfred Curbach
Paradigm shift in construction
Among the greatest challenges of our time are environmental protection and minimizing the consequences of climate change and the exponential growth of the world's population.
This results in an increasing demand for housing and infrastructure as well as an extremely high consumption of resources and energy for its construction. These challenges cannot be met without changes in the building industry. Vision from Dresden introduces a new way of building: C3 carbon concrete.
With over 100 million cubic meters used each year, reinforced concrete is Germany's most important building material. But it has always led to a high consumption of raw materials. Added to this are the enormous CO2 emissions. The production of cement alone is responsible for 6.5% of total carbon dioxide emissions.
Carbon concrete represents the solution here: The steel in concrete is replaced by carbon. Since carbon does not rust, there is no need for all the concrete that is only supposed to protect the steel from rusting. With carbon concrete, construction can be sustainable, environmentally friendly, less material-intensive and lighter. Also, a different design language in architecture could become possible, because "lightweight construction" and "concrete" are no longer a contradiction.
C3 - Carbon Concrete Composite is currently the largest research project in the German construction industry. With a turnover of approx. 12% of the gross domestic product and more than 330,000 companies, the construction industry is the most important economic sector in Germany. Approximately 6% of all employed persons work in the construction industry.
