Building materials

The Innovation Centre for Building Materials (IZ) is a central platform for research, development and knowledge transfer in the field of modern and sustainable building materials. As an interface between science, industry and practice, the IZ promotes innovative solutions for the construction industry of tomorrow. With state-of-the-art testing technology, interdisciplinary expertise and a strong network, the centre supports the development of climate-friendly materials, digital construction processes and future-oriented construction methods. The aim is to actively shape the transition to a resource-efficient and sustainable construction industry and to set new standards for quality, cost-effectiveness and environmental compatibility.

  • Material design and optimisation taking into account chemical, rheological and mechanical properties
  • Multiscale material modelling and numerical simulation of material behaviour
  • Short- and long-term behaviour of mineral building materials (concrete, mortar, masonry) and their durability
  • Fracture mechanics and damage analysis of high-performance building materials
  • Digitalisation in concrete construction (e.g. digital twin, digital manufacturing methods, CONPrint3D)
  • Rheology of complex building material systems and fluid construction methods
  • Management and coordination of interdisciplinary research projects (e.g. DFG-SFB, SPP, GRK, RILEM TCs)
  • Many years of committee work in national and international professional associations (DFG, RILEM, DAfStb, fib, acatech)
